Midwives are the guardians of normal physiologic birth. In the State of California, midwives are licensed by the Medical Board of California. Midwives attend approved colleges or universities, earn degrees and certifications, and pass an extensive, nationally-administered exam. The training to become a midwife usually lasts anywhere from three to five years.
